sanitarium needed files question
i want to test the german version of the game. it is a 3 cd version. i merged all 3 disc files from the data folder, and used only SNTRM.DAT and vids.cap file from the first cd as discribed here: https://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Sanitarium
on the first disc, there is also a res.002 file in the root directory of the first cd, which is not in the data foldesr of the 3 discs, is this file perhaps also needed? or can it be left out?

Re: sanitarium needed files question
I'd say it is needed. Along with any other res.* files and scn.* files.gabberhead wrote: ↑Thu Mar 02, 2023 12:28 pm i want to test the german version of the game. it is a 3 cd version. i merged all 3 disc files from the data folder, and used only SNTRM.DAT and vids.cap file from the first cd as discribed here: https://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Sanitarium

This is the structure of the GOG data folder, which now uses ScummVM.
It's possible that our wiki instruction mean "merge all CD data together, but keep the SNTRM.DAT and vids.cap file from the first CD (ie. do not overwrite these two files with versions of the other CDs?)

Re: sanitarium needed files question
mine is only 3,78mb. i think, if the file is important for the game, it has to be nearly the same size as in the english version. and also it has to be in the data folder. in the root directory of the first cd, there are also res.001, res.003 and res.018 files, which are also all in the data folder, except res.002. all other files from your gog filelist, are also in my game directory, only the res.002 not. first i thought, perhapts it has something to do if the german version is cut, but the german version is the same as the english version, except the language of course

on my german version, only on the first cd and direct in the root directory, the res.002 file is listed. not in any other folders. your english version on the first cd doesnt have this one?

Re: sanitarium needed files question
Steam's version (when choosing Deutch language) also includes this file (res.002).
However, I've played up to the start of the circus chapter and it has not been used so far (I've added some extra debug messages in the code to check that). So far I've seen res files 000, 001, 003, 005, 006, 007, 008, 018, 104, 204 and also mus files 005, 006 and 007 being used. I am only checking among res and mus files, by the way.
Looking at the source code there is a case where it does load up explicitly a "res.002" file, but that is for the demo version, so not applicable here.
Still though, I would be surprised if the file was useless. I guess I can play through the rest of the game to see if it ever gets loaded up.
Edit: Up to the Hive level, additional resources used are:
- res files 009, 010, 014, 015
- mus files 008, 009, 010, 014, 015.
Edit 2: Up to the Finale (and end credits) additional resources used are:
- res files 011, 304, 012, 013, 016, 017
- mus files 011, 012, 013, 016, 017

Re: sanitarium needed files question
I have now played up to the end of the game. I can verify that the res.002 file seems to not be used. Unless I am missing some special secret or never clicked on some option (I think I tried everything), it is not required.
Maybe it was a file needed if playing from the CDs with CD swapping so it could provide access to common resources while on the early chapters (CD1), that the later CDs also cover in their main resource files. So it is not needed when copying everything to a folder, which is what our engine assumes.
I wonder if we could peak into its contents using the engine. I suppose the main (if I am not mistaken) engine developer (alxpnv) should be able to provide more info.

thanx for the info. i think, if this file were needed, it would be in the data folder where all the others files are, which are needed for playing.

Re: sanitarium needed files question
Another observation I can make, is that for the GOG English version, the res 104, 204 and 304 files are identical.
This, however, does not apply to the Steam German version that I also currently have installed.
The version I've played to the end was the GOG English one.
