Gravedigger. To kill or not to kill (spoilers)

Good day.
I've got another one moral dilemma while playing Mystery House. It is possible to stab the digger with dagger, but doesn't really affect somehow on the storyline. He doesn't show any aggression, sept when you fall into a fresh grave he covers you with ground.
So, there is a question: is the gravedigger a bad guy, or have he just been hired to do his job and has no connection with murders inside the house?
