SCUMM source code

Post by Escorter »

Hi!

I'm just curious about the original DOS version of SCUMM. Is the original source code available somewhere?

No it isn't. ScummVM was developed with RE, LucasArts never gave away the sourcecode.

And is there any open sourced "drop-in replacement" engine for SCUMM games (like ScummVM, but for DOS)?

No, but you could try to write a DOS-backend for ScummVM :)

Yeah, say, with use of Allegro. Should not be very hard.

That's a good idea, I thought a lot about that a few months ago, but I'm currently busy with another project. But if I have some free time, "I'll give it a try".

Wow. I did write DOS backend some time ago using DJGPP and allegro lib and it actually worked pretty well, but I deleted all the source codes by accident.
Think I should make backups frequently. :P

Are you considering to developing it again someday? What about a bounty for it?

I will get an old machine for DOS stuff, and I will put certain audio hardware for testing. ScummVM for DOS could be quite interesting for my retrogaming experiments :)

I am not sure you would want to run ScummVm on an "old machine", unless it's not that old after all. It takes a lot of resources, even if run under DOS.

What about from a Pentium 100 to a Pentium II 300? That range seems the most usual DOS configuration for retrogamers as I readed from VOGONS, and more likely the last one...

Are there some aproximatelly hardware requirements list per architecture?

Hmm, so there actually is some interest in a DOS-backend.
Interesting... :)

That's relative...

Not sure for devs, but for users there are DOS related communities that would be interested in a DOS port.

Yes, I meant interest from the user side. If no one uses it making a DOS backend (and releasing it :)) wouldn't be of much use.

im confused... most of the games scummvm supports run in dos, and not win 98+, so why is there any need for one?
