No Speech in The Dig on old 32Bit Notebook MX Linux ScummVM 2.7.0

Post by HaikoB »

Hallo, i need your help :-) ...

i have installed scummVM 2.7.0 on two different computers and wanted to play " The Dig " vom LucasArts taken from my original MS-Dos CD-Rom

1st old Computer with Ubuntu 64bit works fine and clear with Sound and Speach !

but on my

2nd old Computer with 32bit MX-Linux and also scummVM 2.7.0 the Speach don't work ??? Sound works fine !

The options on both computers in scummVM are the same, same installed version of scummVM, same "The Dig" files !!!

What can do ??? How can I solve the problem ???

Thank you so much !!!

Not sure if you have installed ScummVM 2.7.0 from a prebuilt binary from our download page or from the Ubuntu / MX-Linux repositories?

In either case, try running from the command line i.e. "scummvm -d 10" to get debug output and see if there is any clear difference when you start The Dig on each system.

Also, check your Audio settings on the 32-bit MX machine in ScummVM:
https://docs.scummvm.org/en/v2.7.0/settings/audio.html

Ensure that Speech is enabled (not just subtitles) and that the Speech volume is not set to zero.

Note that there are global settings and then you can override these per game, so you should check both...

On my 32bit old computer I found this in the first lines:

$ scummvm -d 10
Debuglevel (from command line): 10
WARNING: Couldn't initialize text to speech through speech-dispatcher!

HaikoB: That message is a failure to initialise speech-dispatcher which is used for Text To Speech (TTS) output. If you have any issue with audio devices, not surprising it has failed, though the rest of the ScummVM audio output should work: https://freebsoft.org/speechd

Could you please answer my first queries though i.e. on the system which has the issue, did you install ScummVM 2.7.0 from a prebuilt binary from our download page or from the Ubuntu / MX-Linux repositories? And again, check your audio settings.

Today I manually installed all the packages from the Speech Dispatcher Documantation
( http://htmlpreview.github.io/?https://g ... tcher.html )

I also tested successfully the "espeak" , "festival" and "spd-say" in the terminal

If I now run scummvm -d 10 the error "WARNING: Couldn't initialize text to speech through speech-dispatcher!" isn't shown anymore!!!

There is no mentioning of The Dig in your log...
Could you post one after starting the game?

You can ESC skip through the intro until the spaceship comes up, soon after there will be voice acting

Oh and make double sure there is a file called "DIGVOICE.BUN" in your game path

There are a few lines in there such as:

Code: Select all

Script 248, offset 0x6d: [BA] o6_talkActor()
IMuseDigital::diMUSEStopSound(): 10000
Opening hashed: digvoice.bun
Opening hashed: digvoice.bun
BundleMgr::readFile() Failed finding sound NEWTON.011
Opening hashed: digvoice.bun
BundleMgr::readFile() Failed finding sound NEWTON.011
Opening hashed: digvoice.bun
BundleMgr::readFile() Failed finding sound NEWTON.011
IMuseDigiFilesHandler::openSound(): can't open sound 10000 (NEWTON.011)
I believe this indicates that your digvoice.bun file may be corrupted. Can you copy the files again from your other PC where you have verified that it's working?
(Also note that if the digvoice.bun file is indeed corrupted, other game data files might be too).

You could check the MD5 hash of these files against the MD5 hash of the files on your other PC to quickly ascertain whether somehow the files differ.

1. I've done the MD5 Check of digvoice.bun of my original CD-ROM an the PC where The Dig works fine - same MD5 Checksum

2. I've done the MD5 Check on my old Notebook ... I think we found the problem :D different MD checksum an I also saw, the digvoice.bun on my old Noetbook ist 0,2 GB smaller ??? But why ??? The files came also from my original CD-ROM ....

3. I copied the right digvoice.bun file from CD-ROM and IT WORKS :D :D :D !!!!

Thank You very much !!! Thank you for the support !!!

if your old notebook has it's own cd drive, than that might be your culprit...those drives weaken and the older they get the more error prone.
You were just unlucky to hit one of those error readings with the game cd

glad you got it sorted
