Options for playing on iPad?

Post by Chatterton »

Hello there!

Longtime fan of Humongous games, I'm trying to get some of my favorites (Putt Putt, Spy Fox, Freddi Fish) to play on my iPad. I just downloaded the ScummVM iOS app but how do I add games from there?

I've used the "Add Game" option on Scumm but I don't know how to get the appropriate files into the "Saved" folder on the iPad for the app. I've owned the games on CD ROM and have those exe files that work fine on Windows (and saved within Google Drive), but I'm unable to get them to work here.

What is the best/easiest way to get these games to run on Scumm iOS? I've read the guides but am confused since sometimes it references options that aren't on mine or is for using a Mac. Do I need to find files that work in iOS somehow?

Thanks! Sorry if this has been asked before, I struggle with technical things sometimes!

You may try checking this step by step instructions: https://www.pixelrefresh.com/how-to-tra ... e-version/

Or our official documentation (linked from within the app too, click on the [?] button): https://docs.scummvm.org/en/latest/othe ... s/ios.html

There are several ways to transfer the files to the ScummVM folder on the iPad:
  • Plug the iPad to your computer and use the Finder on macOS or iTunes on Windows to transfer the files.
  • Download the files on your iPad (for example from iCloud) and use the Files application to move the files to the ScummVM folder.
  • Use the build-in local server in ScummVM and connect to it from a web browser on your computer.
  • Connect ScummVM to a cloud storage and download the games from there.
There is a nice guide illustrating some of those on https://www.pixelrefresh.com/how-to-tra ... e-version/
And our official documentation also has information on those: https://docs.scummvm.org/en/v2.8.0/othe ... s/ios.html

However, as noted in the documentation, the game file download functionality is not available with Google Drive (only saved games synchronisation is available). So that leaves you with the first three options. With a mac I would say the first option is the easiest, but I don't know how easy it is to use iTunes to transfer files to an iPad on Windows. Since the first link I gave as a step-by-step guide for the third point, you could try that one.

I'm a longtime fan too, but have to play them when no one's around because my wife would be like, "Aren't you a bit old for Backyard Baseball & Putt Putt?" lol

If you’ve got the game files on Google Drive, you can download them to your iPad and then use the Files app to move them into the ScummVM folder. If that feels a bit complicated, another option is to connect your iPad to your computer and use iTunes or Finder to transfer the files directly. Once the files are in the right spot, you should be able to add them in ScummVM.
But, when I’m not messing around with trying to get old games to run, I like to kick back with a simple game of solitaire.
