I used German version with English script as I haven't found yet where to reorder the verbs. I will make a deep dive later on and see if I can hack this myself as I want "talk to" rather than simply "talk". If anyone knows where I can change this, please give a shout.

Beta 2 (fully translated up to part 3) is out now:

Oh, I see. Did you use the Special Edition then (German version)? I have that in all available languages via Steam, but it seems more difficult to get scummtr to run on that (if possible at all).
I have the original CD (VGA) as well, which is the version I made my translation with.
First step will be to try that extractpack, I guess.

Good idea to use IPS to distribute it as a patch!

The SE isn't translated but one can extract the original CD version off it. The patch works on any CD edition of SOMI, I only used the German version as basis as it already had modified verbs. After applying the English scripts I was able to translate it from there. The patch is binary modification so all modified assets are transferred when applying it, including the German verb hack.

I've managed to reverse engineer the verb grid, I will disclose the info after implementing into my translation and doing some tests.

EDIT: Success!

The verb grid of Monkey Island 2 can be modified the same way by editing
DISK_0001/LECF/LFLF_0004/SCRP_0021

(I got inspired and even figured out the verb grid of Maniac Mansion :D )

Nice! Are there any major differences between versions, in for example Maniac Mansion?

There are no differences between both Monkey Islands.

Maniac Mansion is a bit different though: different coding of X and Y, 1 byte code for the adverb ("to", "with"), fixed verb widths...
I am still trying to locate those adverbs to translate them, but they seem to be encrypted or something in one of the files, as I can't seem to grep it. Also the other text doesn't display as it should in a hex editor, but since they're longer words it is easier to get a match and locate what I am looking for.

Once I figured out where to change/translate the adverbs, I will make a similar reference sheet.

I believe they're hard-coded in ScummVM. See script_v2.cpp, ScummEngine_v2::drawPreposition().

Nice. I'll probably do Maniac Mansion next as well. There's already an official Swedish version released for the NES but it's all censored and badly translated. Length constraints might be interesting.

I noticed that the death easter egg verb grid has different values, since they have no function connected to them.
I hacked together a version for my translation where I couldn't get "Stare" to fit where it's supposed to be.
I'll do more experiments using the original data and will update my reference sheet later.
