I rather think the hint poster was a crossing-link joke to
their upcoming game ZakMcKracken which also had one of those.

Remember the gasoline canister you can't do anything with on Mars?

Althought i fins it rather strange, crossing a joke to a game not
yet published, they must have have been already in development...

Just a thought, so

Indy3 also had this joke with the other car.

Didn't the gas can show up in The New Adventures of Zak McKracken?

I know Sam and Max are part of a totem in Indy3 (in the office) and Max is a totem in MI1 (with the totem poles). Can't remember them in Indy4 or MI2, though.

Indy 3: Totem in Indy's office
MI1: Figure in front of the Monkey Head (both Sam and Max)
MI2: Costume Shop
DOTT: Max is in a Portrait in the 1st floor corridor in the past Mansion.
Indy 4... I don't know... but there is a purple meteor on one of Indy'S shelves.

But maybe, the hint poster just intended to give you a very subtle hint that you have to fix the electric wires in that room before you are able to turn on the light in the safe room in order to read the tiny inscribed number combination.
Mirko's right on both counts and fixing the wires is unnecessary to operate the telescope.

I think fixing the wires is necessary to operate the arcade games. You can then read the secret number code combination needed inside the secret lab in the high score table of one of the arcades. So there is some link between eletric wires and numbers. Any way, I think the hint poster just gives hints and it's not to be taken literally.

That's just true for the VGA version, in the EGA version there is no reference to Sam and Max.

It's definitely necessary b/c you have to play Meteor Mess

But with Bernard beinfg the only one who can fix those wires, wouldn't it have made more sense to mention him in the hint. I think there might be something we're not seeing here.

Of course there's also the possibility that the hint poster, like most game manuals and suppliments, was printed long before the game was finished, and thus this puzzle never made it into the final cut.

I think everybody can fix the wires. Bernard is just (excluding Jeff) the only one who can fix the Telephone and the only one who can use the Radio Tube to call the Meteor Police.

I just checked it and you're totally right - anyone can fix the wires (guess its been too long since I played through MM, huh?)

Even so I'm going to keep digging at this until my brain melts.

Yeah Bernard SHOULD be the only one who can fix the wires, it seems to me, but strangely ANYONE can.

And just to clarify:

Bernard: can fix the phone and the radio
Jeff: can fix the phone only
