Wrong Aspect In Full Screen

I'm having a similar problem on Windows XP using a normal 5:4 (1280x1024) screen. When I switch to fullscreen mode with aspect ration correction, the screen resolution is changed to 640x480 or 1024x768 (depending on graphics mode, 2x or 3x), which results in a vertically stretched image. Changing the image scaling mode in Catalyst Control Center doesn't seem to work, and setting SDL_VIDEODRIVER to directx has no effect either.
