Well, ScummVM support does increase sales.
Some games sold right now only work well on modern hardware/OS with Scumm (or Dosbox or VMWare). Some of those games even come budeled with ScummVM. Check the GoG affiliation thing for examples.
Also, Scumm can help market new installments of a game.
There will be a new Simon The Sorcerer, and the prequels supported with Scumm help the marketing of the new game along.
LucasArts could (if they had any brains) start selling an Monkey Island Magapack with games 1,2 & 3 running
in Scumm. They could still do that if they decided to market a game 5 soon.
Then there is the mobile phone thing. Many believe the adventure game is dead on the desktop, but on the mobile phone there is less slack for fancy graphics and complicated controls. Many games with Scumm support could be marketed there successfully.
If the company is really lazy they could perhaps give the source with the middleware and a fee to a Scumm developer and slap a NDA contract on the middelware. Let the developer replace the proprietary stuff himself.
I think there are plenty of business opportunities here.
