Well i did manage to extract the files and make a RESOURCE.WIN that goes ingame but i doubt it will work when the game tries to change the disk, unlike broken sword. BS had two different lines in the config file, equivalent to two different disc. Antara depends on a ";" separator (that i used to put in different subdirs). Now, as the files have to have the same name i'm sure it will get the wrong one when it changes discs. Unless the name can be hex edited on the different res01, res02, res03 files. Let's see if the audio filenames are stored there, or hardcoded.
Edit: right it crashes if the order is inverted. Are the resource.aud and resource.sfx files compressed files?

Looking at videos of Betrayal in Antara on YouTube, I sincerly doubt the game is pure SCI. In fact, I would have guessed pure non-SCI, but your evidence seems to contradict that.

Most probably, it's some kind of hybrid. Similar to Coktel's Inca II and The Last Dynasty, which is mostly gob, but with hard-coded space battles (the scripts call a spaceBattle() opcode with a filename parameter and expect a return value back). Just more extensive/complex.

I'm intrigued now. I don't recall the game being even a real 3d engine (not sure). It had (i think) no Z axis movement, like lands of lore.

The game's resources do load in the SCI Resource Viewer. I tried using UniSCI to join all of the resources, it recognizes it but it fails. It does look very much like an SCI 32 game.

I just tried the demo in SCI Viewer. They indeed load. But, I only see VMD/View/Picture/Audio/Message/Font/Palette resources. No SCI scripts. And some of the messages have a script like language in there. The kernel table is in the executable, though, as well as all the resource loading. In the normal "memory" type is an unknown resource with a 'PWAD' FourCC (DOOM?!!??!?!?!?!?!).

It's piqued my interest now. I'll go try to get a copy on eBay.

It's not finding any scripts or heaps in the full version, either. The viewer has no trouble loading all of the other resources. Curious.

By the way, what is wrong with the PQ2 demo is that it is missing a couple of files, resource.002 and resource.003. I have looked for another copy and have not been able to track anything down, yet.

A bit off topic... It's not missing those resources, the data in resource.001 is corrupt. See my bug report for more info.

Sierra did use a similar resource scheme for some of their non-adventure games. Judging from the demo only, it does have some SCI resources (the ones clone2727 mentioned). However, these are all related to pictures, views, sound and texts. The VMD videos it has are empty. The most important thing is that it uses its own kind of scripts (which aren't the ones used in SCI adventure games), and that it has a 3D engine. The SCI resources are all the 2D graphics used (characters, tavern rooms etc).

Therefore, even though the game does indeed have some SCI resources, the 3D engine plus the custom scripting system classify it as "non-SCI", as these two are major parts of the engine. They just reused some parts of the SCI system for the game, but the main parts of the engine are very different, which is understandable, as a game was a 3D RPG, not a 2D point'n'click adventure :)

Not to derail the topic, but the installer refers to resource.002 and resource.003. RESOURCE.001 is only 210 KB, which for even a demo is pretty tiny. If you run the installer it will ask for disk 2 for resource.002.

That may be true, but the first volume is still corrupt :)

Question

Post by qquestion »

I have windows 7 and played all the way through chapter 6 (end of disk 2). However, disk 3 won't read. Both mounting the disk 3 .iso file and burning the ISO onto a cd (used cdburnerxp and didn't do it in compatibility mode) didn't help. The image on the disk didn't register (looked like it was blank), and I keep getting the same "please insert disk 3" when I mount it.

Any suggestions?
