Big Thinkers Kindergarten

Post by DDPhelps »

I currently have ScummVM version 1.6.0 on my Mac OS X Laptop version 10.6.8. I don't know what's going on or why, but I am having A TON of problems with this game! First of all, whenever I start up the game, after the Humongous Entertainment Logo pops up, I get a message saying 'No valid Save/Load folder is set! Please use the 'choose save folder' menu to select one.' Then after the opening intro, ScummVM just quits. No error message or anything, It just closes. Then if by some miracle I can get the game to work, It's impossible to save. When I go to save, the game closes again and I lose all of my progress. Is there any possible way to fix these issues, or am I just utterly screwed?

Well, according to the compatbility chart, this game is supported and should be fine:
http://www.scummvm.org/compatibility/DEV/thinkerk/

It uses the SCUMM HE engine:
http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Big_T ... ndergarten
http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Humon ... ertainment

This does have a number of outstanding issues with the rarer games which are harder for the SCUMM devs to get hold of... I think this is one:
http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Humon ... t/Progress

I suspect this may be due to "bad characters" in the scummvm.ini configuration file as indicated in:
http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Humon ... ral_Issues

This can be found on OSX in the location indicated by the README file:
https://github.com/scummvm/scummvm/blob ... ADME#L2017

Try removing the old configuration file (backup it up and then remove it), start ScummVM to generate a new empty file and then do an "Add Game" on just this game and test with this. It may be necessary to manually set the savepath to a folder which you have read/write access to as the default may not be sufficient...

Beyond this, if you are still having problems, then you should post the contents of your scummvm.ini file with a single entry here, along with file MD5sums of your Big Thinkers Kindergarten CD datafiles produced by a tool indicated here:
http://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Repor ... _checksums

This will allow us to make further diagnosis and investigation and eliminate corrupt datafiles as the cause.

Also, at that point, it would be sensible to open a "official" bug on the tracker as this will need a fairly indepth investigation by the SCUMM devs and thus may take a while...
