DOTT MT-32 very low volume on macOS (SOLVED)

Post by Burrito78 »

Hi,

i've played Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2 with MT-32 on the same machine without issues at all regarding volume levels.

The music in Day of the Tentacle (German CD version) is way too low. If i set music volume to 256 and SFX/Voices to 30, i have to crank my volume to almost 100% on my Macbook for the music to have a normal volume. SFX are still too loud then in comparison.

All three volume controls are reacting as expected, it is just that MT-32 volume is way too low even at the highest setting.

I selected "MT-32" as music device for DOTT and copied the ROMs in the game directory. When i copy them out i get an error that the ROMs aren't found so i'm sure it works as expected.

I tested with both latest release and a current nightly build.

Regards,

Hi,

just did more testing on this on another machine (2012 Mac mini) using a fresh installed ScummVM latest branch master (macosx-x86_64-master-274500e0.tar.xz).
I also used a ROM set from a different source this time just to rule these out as a source of the problem.

Sadly, same results. Very low music volume even at highest setting compared to voice/sfx.

Did you try increasing the gain from the MIDI tab to something higher than 1.0?

I think that should do the trick.

Yes, you are right! Thanks for giving me a helping hand there!

Setting MIDI -> MIDI Gain higher than 1.0 is the solution to the issue i had!

I think it confused me that there are two different volume controls for music and the one i needed was in the MIDI tab although i'm using MT-32 which also has its own tab! Thanks again.

These are the settings i'm running right now which result in a good balance of voice/sfx and music in DOTT.

PS: I said MT-32 here because it happens exactly the same with MT-32 ROMs. In reality i'm using CM-32L ROMs as suggested by the "List of MT-32-compatible computer games" on Wikipedia.
On macOS i drop the two ROM files in the folder together with the respective game files. They get picked up there automatically by ScummVM without further configuration. I selected Audio -> Music device -> MT-32-Emulator in the game specific options for DOTT.

I finally read all the documentation (Hah!) and it isn't mentioned anywhere that MT-32/MUNT volume is also controlled by the "MIDI gain" setting.
Maybe this should be added.

Or even better, change the location and name of the "MIDI gain" slider so it is more abvious that it's not only controlling MIDI.
