Translations forum

Post by Vag »

I believe that it would be nice to have a "Translations" forum under "Main forums".
It would be useful for translators of games and maybe attract more of them. The rom hacking scene blossomed (before it shrank again) and resulted in many great hacks and translations in many many languages. I think it is inevitable for the same to happen with ScummVM games. I know there are already some translations (I'm preparing one) and soon there will be 2 more greek ones.
There are already many posts that could be moved to that forum anyway.

What is your goal? What if the ScummVM Team will not want such subforum to be created? You will force them with your petition? Where is the content? What kind of questions will be discussed there? Who will moderate it?

Of course, there is already whole "industry" around such translations and perhaps they have their close communities. But generally ScummVM wants original untouched data to work with.

is there any way to only make forum mods be able to post polls? The vast majority of the polls in here are pointless anyway

I am a member of GreekRoms, a greek fan translation group. I have translated almost 50 games in greek (many different genres and systems) and I can tell you I have spent months of work on that without any material return.
I don't have a goal, I have a wish: I want even more people to start translating games in greek (mostly, and in other languages of course). Rom hacking and game translating is fun and rewarding by itself, but it has a point: to let people that don't speak english (or japanese, or any other language) to experience classic games and enjoy them. I'm lucky my sons are trilingual and they understand english, but there are so many greek kids that don't.

If they did, it would make me happy. If not, no damage done, it's their forum!
I'm not trying to force anything, it's just a poll. I was expecting the majority to say no anyway.
The questions discussed there would have to do with games translations. Technical stuff for the translators, bugs or discussions about the translated games.

The rom hacking scene was at its peak a few years ago, mostly because of some great japanese (mostly SNES) (mostly RPG) games being translated in english. The techniques and the tools advanced but the interest decreased naturally (too many translators, too many games already translated).
Some people, we still love rom hacking and we'll never stop.
As for the ScummVM team, they don't have to be concerned about any hacks or translations... It's the translator's job to make everything work properly. The translator generally doesn't change the program itself but the text, graphics, music, etc. The only addition to ScummVM itself would only be new fonts.

Does this reply have to do with this specific poll or the "vast majority of the polls"? Why didn't you ask for this poll to be removed, if you disagree with me posting it and choose to offend me by not addressing to me? If you don't refer to this one, but the "vast majority of the polls", then you should say it in a new post!

I'd also like to clear something up. Translating games is not illegal. Translations of games are in the form of patches, which don't contain copyrighted material. The gamer, in order to play a translation, he should have the original game anyway.

1) yes this reply has something to do with this specific poll
2) I'm not a big fan of censoring what others already posted. limiting polls in future sounds like a good idea to me though. feel free to disagree.
3) see 1) - I also posted something similar as a reply to most polls so far

No, my question was not about your role as a translator, but about goal of this very post. I myself took part into translation of some titles into Russian and still consulting RuSCUMM team which translates LEC and other ScummVM-supported games into Russian.

No, my point was is that such poll is pointless (pardon the pun). I.e. this your detailed reply will have more impact that knowledge that 50 out of 300,000 ScummVM users would like to have such subforum.

Questions about translations? I hope you don't mean something language-specific. As of tech details about the games, i.e. how text is stored in them, our Wiki can already be a source of such information.

So, it is not yet clear to me about contents of such subforum. I.e. will there be enough material in there? I really suggest you to start asking your questions and providing some tutorials right on this forum, and if there will be enough threads, we can discuss creating a new subforum and moving all relevant messages there.

I am someone that would really like more translations of games in his language. For example, some days ago, Grim Fandango was translated in greek (I think it's the first greek fan translation of an adventure game). I am thrilled and I believe many people are. That's the reason I posted that poll, because I believe such a forum would help more translators. By the way, my answer was more than that quote.

Well done, I know how hard such a job is.

I think the analogy is different, because 50 out of 50 translators would use the forum, but not all 300000 ScummVM users are using the ScummVM forum. The current analogy is 25-30 translation relevant posts in 12 pages of posts, which I believe would be more if there was such a forum.

I don't mean language specific, I think that most (different language) translators would want to help each other anyway. A Wiki is different than a forum, my opinion is that they can co-exist.

I didn't want a forum for me only. I will do that, thanks.

Well, like Vag, i'm a member of a translation group (Portuguese-BR).

It would be nice to have a forum to the translation topic.... but.. ScummVM isn't about translation, it's about the 'emulation' of the game engines, right ? So, I don't see the point here :(

Sorry... Maybe a website about the translation tasks, what to do, programs related to it...

I second Saulob. I'm a translator myself and don't feel the need to clutter the ScummVM forum with translation topics. We have our own dedicated circles for that. Of course there's still the occasional need to ask for some bit of info, but that can be done via the technical section, or even a feature request on SF.
