How to add a game from a CD disc?

Post by preludebabe »

 Please help - I used Scumm a fair few years ago and have now downloaded it again to play my favourite games. I have Day of the Tentacle and when i go to choose game from my cd drive, it says cannot find any game? Do I have to do something specific for it to be found?

I am running windows XP - the disc is the DOTT and SAM 2 in 1 disc and is the legit version (says windows compatible)

Any help would be great !!

P.S I have gone through computers like roast dinners from mucking around trying to do stuff like this by myself. I am not a great computer tech so a good guide would be an absoloute god send!!

im not sure of the actual disc tree structure, but pointing directly to the CD probably isn't doing it(cause the files required aren't there, in that folder)

so im guessing here but if you point it to "D:/DOTT" for example may help you

secondly, there are known errors with playing directly from a cd, so you may wish to copy them across to your HD

theres a needed file list somewhere on the scummvm wiki(im having trouble finding it, otherwise i would put a link in)... to cut to the chase you only need the files listed in a folder

hope that helps:)

The main problem is with games that use CD audio tracks for music. They have been reported to crash ScummVM, at least under Windows, when being played directly from the CD.

Most other games should work, I guess. Though since I'm a bit paranoid about my CDs, and since the CD players they install into computer all tend to sound like hair-dryers or worse (at least when I'm around), I haven't tried this much myself. Running from the hard disk is so much more convenient anyway.

Fantastic. I dont suppose I can be cheeky to ask how to put it on my HD.

Thanks.

Create a folder in your hard drive (e.g. C:\Games\Day of the Tentacle) and copy all files from the CD there

As to how to copy files... this might be useful:

In most cases, it's just a matter of copying some files from the CD. There's a rather long list of games and their data files.

With floppy versions of games, you may have to run the original installer to unpack the data files first. Games that span multiple CDs may require some files to be renamed.

The trickiest game to get to work may be the Windows version of The Feeble Files. For that game, you need to run the original installer to unpack some of the files, rename some of the others, and re-encode the Smacker video files so that ScummVM can play them.
