A year back [when XNA V1 was released] I had a look around for an engine suitable for an adventure game. I was looking for something similar to Wintermute/AGS/others and my search came up empty.

Of course there's nothing stopping anyone writing an adventure game using XNA (based on a re-usable engine or not!). XNA is just a bunch of services that you can ignore/make use of as you require.

It might be worth 'prototyping' the game in one of the available PC engines before embarking on writing it for XNA. Games are much more complicated than the tech behind them :)
