This part makes absolutely no sense to me.

Anyway, if you do have the original CDs, the instructions in the ScummVM README file should work. It was written for the CD release (where each game spanned two CDs). I don't have any of the DVD releases, so I couldn't say how different they are.

There are twelve question marks and five exclamation marks thats not quite 10000 is it? now thats a rhetorical question so requires a question mark.

As others have pointed out, it's Zork I. (I think the original Zork game may have used a slightly different wording.) It's not a real screenshot, though; I used a paint program. The complete text shown in the picture would have read

Code: Select all

West of House
You are standing in an open field west of a white house, with a boarded front door.
There is a small mailbox here.

>OPEN MAILBOX
Zork wasn't the first adventure game (that honor probably belongs to Colossal Cave Adventure, but it's such an iconic game that it has been spoofed or referenced countless times. One of the most recent examples is probably the Sam & Max game, Abe Lincoln Must Die!, where Sam says, "Well here we are, standing in an open field west of the White House." And while he doesn't mention it there and then, there is a mailbox outside.
