can't save game?!

Post by saschaMunch »

Everytime I try to save my game in Broken Sword 1, a window pops up saying:

Can't create SAVEGAME.INI ()

What should I do? Please, please help. :(

Have you checked that the Save Path setting (look at the Paths tab on the Options dialog) points to an existing folder, and that you have permission to create files there?

My brother has the same problem on his laptop. I've tried the Paths Tab suggestion, and pointed it to the Saves folder, but still no luck. And i'm not sure about the 'having permission to create files there' suggestion that eriktorbjorn mentioned. It hasn't come up with any messages asking for it. It usually asks for permission when just copying data files.

My brother's using Vista Home Basic, Service Pack 1. I'm not 100% clued up with Vista so i'm not sure if there's anything i need to enable/disable. Plus, we installed Broken Sword 1 & 2 using the double pack version, which has ScummVM with it anyway. I've had no problems like this on my computer and saving/loading on Broken Sword 2, on my brother's laptop, seems to work fine.
Also, i've copied that SAVEGAME.ini file off my machine and pasted it into his Saves folder. It's able to save, but only in slot 1 and it still comes up with that message.

Could this be a bug?

Which is a completely different situation.

This rather sounds like a case of, yes, wrong/missing permissions.

Ok. So do you want me to file a bug report or is there something else that can be done?

I want you to check whether you have permissions to write and create files in the save-directory.

Go to start->run and paste the following:

Code: Select all

cmd /c echo Y | cacls "C:\Program Files\Broken Sword\saves" /P "%username%":F /T
This will grant the logged on user full permissions for the folder C:\Program Files\Broken Sword\saves, including subfolders
