Smacker in ScummVM

Post by marzipan »

Well, was quite surprised to read that you added native support for this a while back. So RAD are cool with it now?

What's confusing though is that this wiki page says the following:
Starting from version 0.13.0 ScummVM can read the original Smacker video files (the files with the .smk extension). If you are using an older version of ScummVM you will need to reencode the video files using the RAD Video Tools and the 'encode_dxa' tool (or 'convert_dxa.bat' batch file).
According to some forum posts however, this support is only in the current development version, and not in any stable build. Furthermore, the above text is only under The Feeble Files - the Broken Sword text above still says "can't play SMK due to legal reasons blah blah blah". Does this mean ScummVM will only play SMK under FF at the moment?

There's Smacker support for Broken Sword in the development version of ScummVM, but not in 0.13.

Sooo to summarise - 0.13 can play FF's Smacker only? And Broken Sword 1+2 (currently Smackable in the daily builds) will receive the same treatment in time for the next stable release?

I assume so, yes. I don't see why anyone would remove the functionality now.

The next release also drops support for the old MPEG2 cutscenes (they complicated the code needlessly), and the old "narration and subtitles only" mode for Broken Sword 2 (it was a relic from a time when ScummVM couldn't play the cutscenes at all).

I have the DVD version of Broken Sword 1 and 2 both on a single DVD. I believe this is the version with a custom ScummVM copy included to run the games. I only found MP2 files in my game folders for the videos. Does that mean I need to stick with 0.13.1 to play the games and see the cutscenes?

That's the unfortunate downside to dropping MPEG2 support, of course. But you can download replacement cutscene packs from the ScummVM downloads page that should keep working for the forseeable future.

Okay! I'll download them and try them with the newest builds. Thanks a lot.

Aaaaah you are dropping mpeg2... mystery solved...
I was wondering why the configure script doesn't find my libmpeg2 by default lately. So it's because it's a deprecated feature.
